Longest Grocery Trip Ever


So last night’s trip to the grocery store was maybe the longest grocery shopping adventure I have ever had.

Mostly because, I looked at every. single. label. Annoying? Maybe, but it was interesting. There is a lot of weird stuff in our food.

Though it is unlikely I will ever quit eating meat, my food documentary marathon the other night did make me realize that maybe I should pay more attention to the source of where my animal protein is coming from.


So with that being said… a couple of things I picked up in effort to help ‘clean’ things up a little:

Multi grain bread baked fresh in the bakery with organic ingredients (and it was on sale!)

Almond butter to replace my peanut butter…. my trainer has been bugging me about this one for a while anyway.

WILD salmon. After doing some research, I think I am going to try as hard as possible to choose wild seafood/fish over farm raised when 130

Locally grown chicken (that is hormone and cage free, with a vegetarian diet), from a farm in my community that I literally drive by a few times a week.

And of course, organic produce – which was something that hasnt changed much because I usually buy organic produce when available (and not too expensive!)

There are a few other things I will likely test out too, but I dont want to be completely wasteful so once some of my supplies on hand are gone I will be able to incorporate a few other things as well!


With that being my goal last night, I didnt make it home until a little late, and by that time after looking at all the food, I was hunnnngry. I cooked up some chicken enchiladas.

These things are so easy and very filling! I just diced and cooked up some chicken in a pan (with a little garlic and pepper) and also heated some black beans. Once done, I spread a little bit of beans on a tortilla, topped with chicken, and then a little cheese and wrapped up and placed in a small casserole dish (an 8×8 size).

I continued until dish was full (it fit about 6 enchiladas when I was done) and then covered with a little bit of green enchilada sauce and a sprinkle of cheese and baked in a 400 degree oven for about 10 minutes.

I of course topped mine with a little bit of tomato and some plain greek yogurt on the side (in place of sour cream).


I will definitely be heading off to training tonight, it has been a whole week and I am sure I will be paying for it! My body is definitely ready for a good workout though after the long weekend!

  • What are some “healthy” food substitutes you make either on a regular basis or just sometimes?
    The Greek yogurt instead of sour cream is a new one for me, but I love it. I have done that a lot in baking when a recipe calls for sour cream too!
  • Are there certain things you buy organic?

  1. is it sad that i’ve never had almond butter before? you’ll have to tell me what you think (unless youve already had it, then tell me now!!) haha..i wouldnt mind making the switch over..except for reeses pb cups in my diet because duh, those are necessary.

    i’ve been meaning to try the plain greek yogurt instead of sour cream, it seems like itd be pretty much the same…otherwise, sometimes i use egg beaters, but i think eggs are just as healthy. i use the light versions of mayo or sour cream (but wont do fat free because that shizz is gross)…i’ve also used whole wheat flour in things too, but that def changes the texture a bit.

    i do buy some organic fruits, i buy organic oatmeal and cereals for the most part too. i think some things are worth it and maybe some not so much.

    • I agree! I will definitely be doing some expirimenting!
      I have NEVER had almond butter either so its ok! I was anxious to try it so I opened it up last night. I tried a little to be sure I wasnt allergic because some stuff like that makes my throat itchy but honestly it is just as good! I compared the label to my whipped peanut butter I was using and there arent any huge differences besides the amount of sugar (almong butter has less) and it is a little more “natural” but overall it is actually good and not a big difference, an easy switch I think!

  2. I love to substitute yogurt for sour cream because I hate sour cream! Also, when I’m baking, I usually substitute applesauce for oil. 🙂

    • Oh that is a good one, I ALWAYS forget to do that unless the recipe I am following specifically says it!

  3. I haven’t personally tried it yet, but I keep hearing about how you can substitute apple sauce for butter or oil in recipes and it will cut the calories and fat from a recipe. I will have to get on that sometime…like when I’m baking…which is pretty much never, but hey I can dream right?

  4. Yum, that dinner looks awesome! Good for you for checking out the labels. Honestly, I’m not there yet. I try to eat pretty healthy, but I know there are a lot of things I’m still putting in my body that I probably shouldn’t. :/

    • I think it will be semi hard and I’m going to try to “be good” where I can!
      Also, I think your husband is a lot like my boyfriend in the fact that they are “manly” eaters haha which is another obstacle in itself!

    I like to use Stevia as a sugar substitute and applesauce or pumpkin puree in baked goods!

  6. My favorite substitute is apple sauce instead of oil when baking. I just love it. Plus having applesauce on hand is fantastic because it makes a great snack.

  7. LIfe is GOOD after one of those grocery trips! I love the Greek yogurt trip, and I also use the applesauce one Lauren suggested above.
