Ew, Burpees & Calcium Talk

Morning!

I loved all your comments on yesterday’s childhood snack memories! I forgot about some of the stuff like Poptarts and Mac n Cheese – classics!

———————————

Okay, so last night’s training killed me. I wasnt really in the mood for it when I got off work yesterday, but I went anyway and usually I am fine once I get there. It was so tricky because the moves looked and seemed simple but really they werent. I was completely ready to be done toward the end. I still forced myself to work extra hard though rather than just go through the motions, and I definitely have some [good] soreness today!

I also think my weird mood during my workout had something to do with the fact that I was partnered up with a woman (that I had never seen there before) that seemed to be a bit of a sour puss rather than most everyone else who always has a nice upbeat demeanor about them. Oh well, I just minded my biz and did my thing. Usually when we partner up though, I enjoy it because you sort of feed off of each other for some added energy!

Anyway, you know how I dont like burpees? And how I am not really a fan of push ups? (I may have mentioned this about 100 times). Well, did he have a fun move for me last night…

Picture this, with dumbbells (I used 15 lb). We positioned ourselves with our hands on dumbbells on the ground. Then we did a burpee with a push up in the downward position and then when we jumped up – over head press with the dumbbells. Barf.

Along with that we did some good stretching moves, balance boards, a lunge with a medicine ball twist, and of course others. It was a good one and I felt particularly defeated at the end, haha.

—————————–

Torrance said his stomach was upset when I got home so he just had some soup for dinner which of course gave me free range for myself. Usually when I have free range for myself I make stuff he doesnt like for dinner like eggs, or my veggie and chicken sausage mix. But I actually had the veggie mix for lunch, and an egg sandwich for breakfast – so grilled cheese with cheddar and tomato soup it was!

Geesh….I really need to come up with some new easy/quick meals. I’m so predictable!

Okay random I know, but let’s talk about calcium and bone density real quick.

The other day I was reading an article about calcium, bone density, osteoporosis, etc. I completely forget where I was reading this article from (sorry!) but it was one of the health magazines and it emphasized the importance of getting a lot of calcium in your 20’s. Because? Apparently this is prime time to ‘stock up” as your ability to grow bone density decreases greatly by your 30’s. And we have probably all heard it – women have a higher risk of bone density loss anyway.

(source)

I dont know about you guys, but I dont want to have bone disease(s). And I still want to be somewhat of a strong little old white-haired lady – even with my red lipstick, boat shoes, and eyebrows drawn on.

So, this means we need to stock up ladies! Luckily for us, exercise assists with this as well as getting a lot of calcium. Obviously dairy products contain a lot of calcium (good, I dont feel bad about eating so much cheese!) but the article also highlighted some fruits and veggies that also offered a good source of calcium:

  • Leafy greens
  • Soybeans
  • Oranges
  • Tomatoes
  • Eggplant
  • Pumpkin
  • Peas
  • Asparagus
  • Okra

If you are wanting a little more details info about calcium – WebMD (which I always trust as a reliable source of info!) has a great calculator for how much you should consume and an estimate of how much you currently do consume, list of calcium sources, and of course more info about the benefits of it. You can jump right to the WebMD page HERE.

———————————

Have a good day! I’m off to get a productive day of work in and enjoy my almond butter and banana sandwich!

  • If you go into a workout feeling blah do you find you end up slacking, or do you pull it together and work extra hard?
It depends, sometimes if I go into it feeling blah and my heart isnt in it I end up just going through the motions unless I pep talk myself like last night.
  • Do you know if you get enough calcium? Is that something you think about? What are some sources you get calcium from?

    • I know, honestly I dont really think about it much – but I think I do eat foods with high calcium unknowingly so that is good – I dont feel like I am completely neglecting it! haha

  2. I was always worried I never got enough calcium because I’m not a fan of milk, but a few months back I did some research and saw all the foods {you listed, too} that are loaded with calcium and felt a lot better about it. I still take a supplement, just in case, but I do pretty well on my own with the veggies!

Love that you shared this info with everyone!

    • Oh that is good to hear! Luckily it seems like one of those nutrients that is fairly easy to get without knowing it! I feel like I dont read or see that much about it for it’s importance. But maybe that is because I was never paying enough attention!

  3. I have no doubt that I get enough calcium. I am a dairy lover and eat a ton of stuff from your list! My mom has slight bone loss, so I try to really pay attention to prevention!

Grilled cheese and tomato soup is a ‘go-to’ meal for me!

  4. I’m not good at quick and easy meals either. I do love me some grilled cheese and tomato soup, though. With the sandwich dipped in until it gets good and soggy.

  5. Um I hate burpees. I did 75 on Sunday and I CANNOT walk or do anything for that matter. But It does hurt in a good day! YAY – birthday buddies! Love it! Also, how is the meal planning going? Obviously, this is the worlds most random comment.

    • 75?! Willingly? You are CRAZY. haha kidding.
It is ok I love random stuff. Meal planning is going ok, it saved me money at the grocery store this weekend FOR sure. I havent realyl got to stick to it as much since last night we sort of did whatever for dinner

  6. I actually hate pushups more than burpees. Although there is a kind of burpee you can do WITH a pushup. Double killer. I’ve done those burpees with weights before for the Nike Training Club workouts. KILLER!!!!!!! I usually can get myself to move it in the gym by telling myself not to waste my own time! Time is precious!

    • true! time is precious. Those ones did have a pushup AND overhead press ewwwww! haha triple whammy!
I love the Nike Taining Club Workouts! They have added quite a few new ones recently it looks like too!

I haven’t done burpees since high school, but they killed me then and I’m sure they’d kill me now haha.
I get my calcium from ice cream! And cheese. And starbucks lattes. So I think I’ll be okay as long as I keep up with that diet 😀

Tomato soup + grilled cheese reminds me so much of my childhood! Nothing like some Campbell’s tomato soup to put a smile on your face after a long day! Sometimes I’d add some Goldfish to the tomato pool 😉

I HATE burpees; I always see them and I’m like, “Eh, no big deal” but after one I want to knife myself.

My go-to for getting Calcium is definitely my chocolate milk 🙂
