The Big Two-Four & Sharing A Little Wis-Dumb

It is birthday day! And happy birthday to my birthday blogging twin Lauren!

To kick the celebration off right I headed to Starbucks to redeem my free coffee (that you get if you are part of their rewards program… they mail you a little birthday postcard).

And when I made it to work my coworkers were on top of it… can you tell they know my love for cake?

Oh and dont forget the card!

I’m sure they were laughing it up when they got that plant because it is a huge joke because I kill any plant that I pretty much look at . I have the opposite of a green thumb.

I’m sure the cake themed card and balloon has something to do with the fact that I shared my philosophy on birthday cake with them yesterday like I did on Twitter.

Okay okay, I am still being forced to do work today (imagine that!) so I’m off to handle the real world so I figured I’d share something a little different today.

Get ready for a serious post from yours truly!

In celebration of my turning 24, I have decided to share some things I have learned along my way in adulthood. I hope that doesnt sound too boring. I have been on my own out in the world on my own for a good 6 years now, since I was 18 – I was that eager to be an adult… so here is some stuff (that might seem obvious) that I have learned so far along the way..

1. If you ignore something, it doesnt just go away.
This goes for everything (except zits maybe!). Bills, problems, dilemmas, decisions, work.

You really cant just sweep stuff under the rug, it comes back to haunt you – sometimes even worse. Sit down and deal with things to the best of your ability, even if you have to call in a little help from someone else.

2. Pet’s truly make life better.

Any non animal lovers are disagreeing right now, but its true. Having a waggy, cuddly, furry friend that doesnt judge you, always forgives you, and unconditionally loves you is the best thing ever. Those also sound like traits of an awesome boyfriend/spouse too right? True, but I forgot to mention pets cant talk… which in my eyes may be a plus. Let’s face it, if it were a man it would talk about sports and beer all the time. Point made. (Kidding guys!… ok not really)

3. It is difficult to make friends as an adult.

I’ve mentioned this before. Moving to a new place without being in school or in a job with people my age, I have realized it is a lot harder than just talking someone up at Starbucks or the grocery store (yes I do this a lot! ha!).

Along with this it has made me realize – people dont know you are looking to make friends. It’s not safe to assume anyone who chats you up could be a potential friend. I think we all put up a barrier when we first meet someone. They just think you are being friendly.

I am still working on this one so unfortunately dont have a lot of advice to give if you’re in the same boat, but I have realized letting people know I am new to the area helps – otherwise I just look like a crazy grocery store lady really chatty, friendly person.

4. Networking is important.
Networking isnt just for business people. This goes for everyone. The more people you know, the better. Even if they arent someone you know well… knowing the “right” people has its advantages wether it be a free drink at a bar, a good deal on buying a car, or someone to help you with getting a job at the hospital.

5. Tattoos are permanent.
This is one that does not apply directly to me because I dont have any tattoos (yet). But my generation seems to forget this. Now this certainly does not apply to everyone either because some people know this, and some people have tasteful tattoos that are perfectly fine. (or you are Kat Von D and you will always probably look amazing)

But a tattoo of an eagle holding a rose with a puppy sniffing it and a monkey riding the puppy (this is obviously why I dont have any tattoos, ha!) on your face when you are 20 and drunk may seem like an awesome idea at the time, but trust me, it’s probably not.

6. In a relationship you have to make compromises and choose your battles.

Since I have started the blog, I have actually gotten quite a few emails asking about relationship type stuff. Torrance and I have been together about 9 years now and the biggest tip I ever give people is choose your battles. Seriously. Now Torrance is definitely an awesome guy because he puts up with some stuff from me (and by stuff I mean… that I am very bossy haha). But overall I choose my battles.

Ladies, if your man doesnt put the toilet seat down, ask him a million times if you must – but this really shouldnt be a fight. You lose a little credibility if everything becomes a problem or an issue. Meaning, when there is something that is a TRUE problem, it becomes just another thing you bitch about rather than something that actually needs to be addressed.

And compromise is pretty straight forward. Compromise = I watch motocross for 2 hours so that he will go shopping with me later. Easy! 😉

7. Dont live to work.
Working is a huge part of most of our lives. We spend 40+ hours a week at work for the most part. We may as well somewhat like it, right?  Even when I worked 2 jobs, I still had a life outside of work. I have learned to leave work at work. As soon as I left, I turned my work brain off (especially on Friday) If you own your own business, this is a little bit different as you cant necessarily just leave stuff be… but you still need to have a life outside of work. Travel (even if it is just once a year) go out to dinner, take some kind of class, go hiking, do something.

8. Unfortunately, money does make the world go round.
It is no secret that I’m a realist. So dont take this like me sounding like a greedy person at all. With that being said, whenever people say “money doesnt buy happiness” it always makes me think. It’s true that money does not buy happiness – but in all reality it is an important part of our society today in the fact that it is important because it helps us get the things we need. We need certain things to be happy kinda. Ya follow?

Obviously things like family and health are probably on the top of most people’s “most important things in life” list right? Well, having money can help with this – I need it to go see my family (since they live in other places, I need a way to get to them or even to talk to them on the phone) and it also helps me buy the things I need to stay healthy like good food, medicine if I’m ill, etc. See, it’s true?

9. Things weirdly do have a way of working out.
Again, I’m a realist. If you have ever been in any type of difficult situation, chances are it worked out or you found a way to deal with it.

I dont feel like things magically fall into place (sometimes they do, but that is different – luck helps with that) so if you feel like everything is horrible and things are just crashing down wether it be as small as having a bad hair day, running late, and forgetting something at home – or as large as losing someone close to you or losing your job or home – it has a way of working out, even if it takes a little while and hard work on your part – it will.

That’s all I have for ya today! We will be headinging out to dinner tonight for delicious food and [more] cake of course!

  • What is your birthday cake of choice?
For me, any of the following (or any a mix of) the following: chocolate, vanilla, ice cream cake, banana, red velvet, lemon
  • Give me something (or a few things) you have learned about life in your adulthood!

  1. WOOHOO! Happy Birthday to us! I have also learned that it is SO hard to make friends as an adult UGH. Also, the people who really care about you will make the effort to stay in touch with you.

  2. Happiest birthday wishes! Eat as much cake as you can muster today….especially since it doesn’t have any calories 😉

My biggest “adult” moment was when I started getting excited about getting stuff for my home; my defining moment was a shower curtain at Target. It may sound totally lame, but I’m pretty proud of my decorating skills and enjoy making my home cozy, lived in….and stylish of course 🙂

    • OMG I can definitely relate to that. I was SO excited to get my own place and I remember all my graudation money I got I went and bought a bunch of decor for my little apartment and it was like the best thing ever! I am enjoying doing it all over again in our new home here, even though it is going a little slower, its nice!

  3. happy birthday girl!!!! I wish you nothing but the yummiest cake and lots of glasses of wine today!!!

birthday cake of choice=carrot, hands down. i already told kevin i need it for my birthday every year.

ive learned so many things throughout the years, I also did a similar post around my birthday last year 🙂 i like all of your things…and i agree, its totally hard to make friends as an adult. i’m really a shy person when you first meet me but then i’m outgoing after a bit..i’m just a weird individual. i think the most important thing i’ve learned though is to learn who my true friends are over the years and hold them dearly..good friends are hard to find!

    • Aww thank you! Much wine will be consumed 😉
So true, I have a few close friends now… and honestly all my close friends are friends I made as an adult – AFTER high school. They were people I went to high school with but we werent really friends at the time just sota said hi and stuff, so I know its possible – so weird how that works.

Nice life tips. I am learning how important networking is- in career hunting and in life. And I agree, its hard to make buddies as an adult. Its a shame.

  7. Those were some pretty good pieces of advice, girl! I agree with picking your battles, and not wigging out over every little thing in your marriage. One friend of mine said it like this … if your FRIEND was doing such and such behavior, wouldn’t you just let it go? You don’t expect your friends to do and say everything that way you want them to. So why do you expect your husband/wife to act exactly like you want them to act?

  8. HAPPPPPPY BIRTHDAY!!!!!! I hope you have had TONS of cake today! I love any kind of cake. I love vanilla with buttercream, I love carrot cake with cream cheese frosting, I love it ALL!! However, TONS of frosting is mandatory.

I love your list! I especially agree with the whole making friends as an adult situation–it is SO hard! As my job is online teaching it is ESPECIALLY hard because I literally see NO ONE! My co-workers are completely virtual. Are you sure you don’t want to move to DC? We could be BFFs! 🙂 🙂
