Fish & There’s Something On My Mind…
I paraded into work this morning with a
bag lunchbox full of goodies because I have some errands to run at lunch and dont think I’ll be heading home so I brought lots of snacks/lunch.
Well, breakfast is thrown in there too but snacks for later include a grapefruit, applesauce, a frozen veggie mix (for lunch!) and a Luna bar for later.
The S’mores Luna bars are my new found love for an afternoon snack! They are perfect because usually around 4:00 I am craving something sweet!
Training last night was great! It was weird because it felt like a lot more of a mellow mix, which is nice here and there – but dont get me wrong, I was still an 8 out of 10 on the sweaty mess scale.
We did a lot of moves that involved calves and hamstrings last night. I can tell, because it hurts today haha. Last night after training we even did some special stretches to assist with oncoming pain (kidding!)
We did do some squatys on air discs, and hip abductors using slider discs, tricep dips, calf raises, wall sits holding a medicine ball out in front of us, grapevines (yeah the oldschool kind where you run side-to-side), and also an awesome chest press type thing using a bar in a lunge position – I dont even know how to begin to explain it – but it was fabulous, and I am feeling it in both my arms/chest and legs today!
And after training? We ate fish.
I have been so weird about fish lately, since I have been trying to buy only wild caught (rather than the farm raised stuff) which now that I have been paying attnetion to that, it changes weekly what they have in the seafood counter that is wild caught. So, that above, is orange roughy because that was my only option. I do like orange roughy though, it is more of a plain fish in my opinion which I am okay with because then I can season it up how I like.
It was served alongside some staemed green beans (with balsamic), tomatoes, and whole grain angel hair with a little herbs and cheese.
Delicious! And I must admit, I was in bed early last night – but it felt good. I have no idea why I have been so tired lately but the extra sleep was much needed!
Okay before I get into this, let me preface by saying – I am someone who is 100% guilty of just going along in my ways and not really paying much mind to something. I’m stubborn. But I am for sure someone who learns from experiences – and other people’s expereinces, especially if it is someone I “know.”
With that being said, there is something that has been on my mind lately…
For some reason, it seems everywhere I turn lately it has been being brought up all of a sudden – more specifically I know of 3 people that have found Melanoma in the last month and have had surgery to get spots removed – 2 of them are my age.
This scares me, and makes me feel really dumb for using tanning beds to be honest. I actually had a freakout moment a little over a year ago and quit using them all together, but knowing that I used them a lot throughout my teen years still sucks. I think about some of my friends that went tanning 4x a week…scary, which luckily I cant say I ever did that much – but it doesnt matter. I was doing something I knew was 100% not smart.
And as much as I heard stuff about it and saw and heard the warnings, I never paid much attention to it and went on my way, because like I said – I’m stubborn and I did what I wanted.
After that freakout moment over a year ago, I slathered on the spf 50 like there was no tomorrow. Which in Alaska seemed crazy because the 3 months that it is sunny, the sun isnt really that strong. Maybe I went from one side of the scale (careless) to the complete other (crazy paranoid person).
(Yep, I still got that tan in Belize, even through my spf 50!)
So, with all this recent activity in seeing and hearing about other people dealing with it – I have decided to make an appointment with a dermatologist (which I have never been to one in my life by the way) to get checked. Because it seems like the the smart thing to do.

And if you think this is silly and ignore all that has been said here, that is fine too because I have definitely been guilty of that. But really, what does it hurt to be educated about something? Nothing.

I love halibut but am realizing that is going to be hard to find here! I do love salmon also though!
- Do you have any fears of skin cancer? Are you guilty of having used tanning beds at some point? Do you use sunblock?
- Do you feel you learn or at least take something away from others’ experiences?
Yes, especially if it is someone I “know.” I guess it hits a little closer to home.
