A Panting Dog, Walmart, & My New Coffee Maker

Lets recap the weekend in list form shall we?

  • Had a really tough workout Friday night that left me sore (in a good way) all weekend!
  • Kona was panting uncontrollably and I thought I was going to have to take her to the Emergency vet, which luckily ended up taking her to a vet in the morning and figuring out it is (hopefully) nothing serious.
  • I have discovered that I will be doing most of my grocery shopping at Walmart now because it saved me a lot of money.
  • I bought the coolest coffee maker and am now able to make and enjoy the best coffee EVER. If you skip the rest of the post, at least read that part (if you are a coffee drinker of course!)
  • I have two fun new recipes

Okay, now here’s the long version.

A good sore all weekend

I had one of the hardest workouts yet. It was weird because it was only me and two other people at my 6:30 group (usually it is pretty busy Friday nights – there were a ton at the 5:30 group though).

The hardest move was definitely mountain climbers with our feet in the TRX straps. I was seriously sore all weekend, especially yesterday (2nd day is always the worst!) but am feeling much better for tonight.

Kona’s vet visit

Friday night was really stressful because Kona was acting super weird.

She was actually panting really hard. We assumed she was hot so we fed her ice cubes, the usual. But a few hours later, and even in bed she was breathing pretty erratically and still panting. She was acting normal otherwise, she ate, she drank like normal, she was playful and sassy, etc so we just tried to calm her down but it continued. After about 4 hours we were getting ready to take her to the Emergency vet because she was acting so restless and just breathing quickly, but figured she was starting to fall asleep so we would wait until the morning.

So I woke up early Saturday to call around and try to get her scheduled with one of the local vets. Since she doesn’t actually have a vet here yet, I figured it might be hard but would go anywhere that would take us since most are open short hours on Saturday (she was still panting in the morning by the way)

Well, turns out she has allergies – which makes sense because a couple of weeks ago I commented on how it seemed like her nose was stuffed up. They did the usual blood work and such too which should be back today or tomorrow just to be sure it isnt anything else major, but they said everything sounded and looked fine from the usual exam.

So they just suggested some normal Benadryl – which seems to be working like a charm so far – not to mention it helped her sleep…

Yes, I think it is hilarious they both passed out like this, and Kona’s foot kept twitching and kicking him in the face and he would groan. Instead of trying to move her, naturally I grabbed my phone to snap a picture and laughed.

I also learned at the vet that Ms Chunky has also gained 10 lbs since we left Alaska apparently. She has actually been getting more exercise, but also more people food… oops.

Walmart – I hate and love you

I hate Walmart.  I lie, I secretly like it because it is so cheap and has everything – but I hate it because it is crazy there.

Back in the day when I worked at Subway forever, I actually worked at the one that was in Walmart. It was nice because I worked early so I could always shop before work when no one was there.

Anyway, I decided that I wanted to test Walmart out here for some cheap groceries. It is a little further away (not that far) so now that I have a vehicle that doesn’t suck down gas like crazy, I can justify making the extra drive to save on groceries.

Of course I had to drag Torrance along to go through the torture with me (duh).

It was pretty bad, I’m not gonna lie. The people there… oh boy. And there were tons of them too. Not to mention Torrance sucks to grocery shop with because he rushes me and takes forever at the same time. During the first half of while we are at the store he stops and looks at EVERYTHING and I have to hurry him along, and the halfway through his attention span dwindles and he is asking “are we done yet are we done yet? I gotta peeeee! wah!”

Anyway, overall, it was a success – I saved A LOT. I got double the amount of groceries (and a few cosmetics) I usually do and spent only about $10-$20 more than I usually do on half the amount of stuff. This is exciting for me, because I spend way too much on groceries.

Now I just need to figure out the best time to go there when there isnt 6,000 people there… I’m thinking Sunday morning.

I have to admit, I was a little disappointed that I left without getting to see this lady/dinosaur?

Or this amazing rat tail…

And especially that I didn’t get to partake in any of this in the parking lot…

Well, maybe next time. I can only hope.

My new love

Saturday we were actually planning to go hiking but the weather changed and ended up being rainy all weekend, so we stayed in Saturday night with a movie, and an emergency trip to get froyo at 9pm. How did I ever live with not having frozen yogurt 1 mile away?

Sunday morning, I randomly decided I needed to make the most amazing coffee ever. I knew what I wanted, but I just didn’t know how…

Let me explain; I got spoiled because I worked at a coffee hut for 4 years and had constant access to a top of the line espresso machine. So now, nothing really tastes the same. Yep, I’m pretty much a coffee snob.

Well a year or so ago, while visiting Torrance’s mom, she had some coffee in her fridge that I heated up and it was the best thing ever. I wanted that.

So a couple of text messages with her later, and an Internet search, I figured out what I needed to make it happen, including a certain coffee maker that I needed to go out and purchase (which I was determined to do at 9am yesterday morning)

I swear, I see these things all over the place, but after going to three stores that didn’t have it, I was a little irritated. So I ended up at Bed Bath & Beyond (because they have everything) and struck gold because it was even on sale (It was $30 by the way, depending on what size you get – I got the bigger one).

That is a “Bialetti Moka Espresso Maker” if you are wondering, and it is the weirdest, most simple contraption ever that produces the best coffee.

It is like a caveman concept too (not really, but maybe Mideval).

And this is the coffee to use (you can use other espresso, but this stuff is good and cheap, about $4 for that can at Walmart):

Oh. My. Gosh. To die for.

So this is how it works. The top and bottom screw apart….

And you take the little tray out of the bottom piece (it just pops out)

You fill the little tray I am holding with coffee and press it down/level it. If you don’t want it too strong (it is very, very strong coffee anyway) you can use less – I filled mine about 3/4 way full.

And then fill the bottom piece (that the tray sits on) with water… about up to screw you see on the side).

I forgot to take the picture at an angle, but connected to the tray I am holding, on the bottom is a “straw.”

You put the tray back in the bottom piece, and then screw the top piece back and on literally set it on the stove burner. Directly on it, and crank that baby up.

How it works, is when the water boils, it goes up the straw, through the tray, and spews the coffee out into the top container.

Voila! Since my explanation isnt that great, here is a little video about it if you are curious.

I actually made a couple batches and put into a container to refrigerate and heat up (or make iced coffee with!)

Since the coffee is so strong, a little goes a long way – you really only need to use a couple of ounces of it and then fill the rest of the cup up with milk or water of choice, and sweetner if you like – like a latte.

I have two awesome recipes from the weekend that I will be sharing later this week…

Have a great Monday!

  • What was the highlight of your weekend?
  • Love or hate Walmart? Where do you do the majority of your grocery shopping?
  • Are you a coffee drinker? Have you ever seen one of those espresso makers?

  1. I’m similar to you. I have a love-hate relationship with Walmart. When we lived in Wapak, Ohio, it was my only grocery store option. So I was SO excited to move to Atlanta and have so many more options. However, I quickly discovered how much pricier the other stores were. So I still do some shopping at Publix, Whole Foods, etc … but there are certain things that I just have to go to Walmart for. For example, Life cereal for the husband. It’s $3 at Walmart for a big box. It’s like $4.70 or something at Publix for a smaller box! Crazy!

    • that is crazy! I know, I noticed most of the stuff at Walmart was 50 centers – $1 cheaper – even my beloved Chobani was 50 cents less per container!

  5. Ohmyword. I would totally freak if Boyd was doing that!! I’m glad Kona’s doing better!!! I’ve used one of those little espresso makers before… unsuccessfully. super cheap versions are really popular in the Dominican Republic. And I got desparate when my maid broke my french press. lol. I know. Sounds like a rough life with a maid. haha. Kevin still won’t let me get one in Denver! 🙂

  7. “he rushes me and takes forever at the same time” HA!! I love that, I can totally relate to it. I don’t go to Wal-Mart often b/c there isn’t one really anywhere near me, but I do agree, they are way cheaper. I find that if you go at like 2 in the morning you can avoid a lot of the crazies…but then again, its 2 in the morning….:) I love coffee. We live and breath by our Keurig. I don’t know what we did before we had one of those!

  8. Glad Kona seems to be okay! Jet had some type of funky stomach thing going on last night and this morning, so we’re hoping that it’s nothing serious!
