Fitness Goals–Resolutions, Chaos, & Muscle Definition

Yesterday, I went back and looked at my 2012 goals (aka “New Years Resolutions.”)

Well, I sort of forgot about them. Not really, but only two of them really cross my mind lately. That is a little sad. But here’s the list… and as of September, here’s the progress:

1. Lose 20 pounds.

This one gets a half check. I have lost about 9 solid lbs since the beginning of the year. I say ‘solid’ since it seems like I fluctuate about 5 lbs daily, the 9 lbs has been gone long enough for me to consider it a solid weight loss.

2. Drink 120 ounces of water per day.

Check! This is the only goal I can say I have 100% achieved. I have been drinking 120-130 oz per day. Boom!


This is what 120-130 ounces of water looks like, about 8 standard (16oz) water bottles – that’s really not a lot!

(PS – for all you greenies, I typically drink mine from a water cooler with a reusable water bottle, not a bunch of plastic bottles, so don’t get your panties in a wad)

3. Get into running and run a 5k by the end of the year.

Honestly, this probably isnt going to happen. I just havent had an interest in running. At all really. And I have been focusing on other fitness  goals instead. Maybe this one can roll over to next year and we will try again then.


4. Be more organized.

This one is another half check. I have definitely gotten some of my shit together since the beginning of the year. I keep my truck neat and tidy (probably since we got a new one in April), and I have a nice home for all of my stuff around the house…..Besides one shameful thing. We desperately need a desk at home. Between both of our work and our everyday stuff, it has overtaken a part of my kitchen counter.


See? Chaos. Paperwork, nail file, tape measure, calculator, magazines, sunglasses, hats… and yes, that is a foam finger.

This one is still a work in progress.


Anyway, on to the fun stuff….

So like I said, I have been focusing on other fitness goals instead.

Since my training focuses a lot of strength training [it is actually “functional training” and focuses on everything, but we do a lot of strength movements] I have grown to love things I used to hate.

Once upon a time when I went to the gym regularly (when we lived in Alaska) I was a cardio queen. I made myself do the weight machines but I sort of dreaded it. I was so much more into cardio and had this notion that cardio is what burns the fat off (well, it does) so that’s what I did.

Well, as any seasoned fitness buff knows (<—- I am definitely NOT one of these, by the way, but have just learned this) muscle helps burn fat, so I made myself do it.

Well, I was half ass doing it. I realize that now.

So, once I started with my group training last November, I have learned to love free-weights, kettle bells, and other miscellaneous equipment (okay, bosu ball, I like you too). I have seen my body change and react more-so than the cardio (and half assed strength training) I once did.

Soon, I came to love this new way of doing things and the variety it offered more than  I ever liked the treadmill, elliptical, and stair stepper.

Point of all this being – I have some new fitness goals. They involve toning.

I want abs.


I’m not one for self portraits in the mirror, but I just have to show you what I’m working with now. Not bad, my stomach is sorta flatt(ish) but not defined. I want defined.

Now in January, it wasn’t really even flat. So, progress is being made.

(PS – don’t mind my pajama’s. Right when I got home from training last night I changed into them, that’s how I roll)

I also want defined arms….


I have a little bit of wing going on, but I’m okay with that…for now.

See that tiny bit of definition in my bicep? That wasn’t there 6 months ago. It’s something.

I feel that if my workouts werent so scarce this summer, I would be closer to these goals – but life happens, and that is what crappy winter is for right?

  1. I have such a hard time drinking water. I usually can only get down 2-3 cups per day, if that. I don’t know how everyone does it. I hate water. And I much prefer my sugary sodas. 😦 So that’s a work in progress.

    Good for you on the 9 pounds lost!! I know how hard it is to lose even 1 pound!

    • yeah, it helps that i love watrer, but there are tons of people that dont! A lot of people have to add stuff too it. a lady I workout with was telling me she has to add a tiny bit of crystal light to it, not even a whole packet. or sparkling water with some crystal light.

  2. Oh man… I’m awful with water. Nice work!!! 9lbs is pretty rocking too!! I’m trying to learn to do double unders and pull ups right now!

  3. My fitness goal is to master the bike! I bought my very first road bike about a month ago, and I really want to get better at it.

  4. Maybe strength training will be one of 2013 goals!! haha im just so in love with running that I find myself dreading it…but i have a feeling after marathon training i might not mind a break from it but we’ll see! Im doing well with my 2012 goals and im excited to finally run the race!!

    I’m always chugging down water at work but when i get home or on the weekends I def slack..i’d like to work on that.

    • I actually struggle a little more on the weekends! Maybe down to 80 oz or so. which realistically i need to drink MORE on the weekends since I am drinking more naughty things like booze 🙂

  5. I’m really trying to up my water intake and decrease my diet coke intake 😉 it’s a work in progress!
