Some Normalcy, Christmas Decor, & A Sick Brown Dog (Again)

All of your guys’ kind words have just been so amazing. Thank you. I never expect anyone to pour out their feelings or even say anything but you are all so sweet for your comments! It’s been tough, but we are hanging in there.

We managed to make it through the service last weekend, which as you can imagine offered a little closure. It was a day completely dedicated to his mom, and it was really nice.

I dont want to go into all the details and such since that could be considered a little tacky or it may be weird for some for me to get into details, but oddly enough I think the “best part” (if there was one…) was just seeing all of his moms friends and all the people that cared about her.

We even visited her favorite bar and hangout and they had a special spot just for her. With her favorite wine.

DebbieIt may seem weird, but stuff like that is actually really special.

We somehow managed to find a little bit of Christmas spirit amidst the sadness. We just try to remind ourselves that that is what his mom would have wanted, she never wanted us to be sad or put our lives on hold – so as hard as it has been, we are trying to keep going.

So….we went and got our (real!) Christmas tree and got all decorated!

We actually used a lot of his mom’s decorations on the tree this year. Torrance has always spent Christmas with his mom since his parents got divorced and she moved to FL when he was 6, so I think that meant a lot to him. It’s the little things.

We also have an obnoxious 6 ft tall, flashing green light up swirly tree outside our front door. I will spare you a picture though.

Xmas4 And yes, that is a kitchen table you finally see.

It only took us a year and 5 months to get one. No big deal.

Though, now I realize it’s time to hang up the pictures in the dining room!

I have even been cooking some lately.

Xmas5 And drinking wine out of my festive wine glasses of course.

Oh, and Kona is back to the vet. Again.

I swear…. that dog. Not for fleas this time though.

I cant even remember if I told you guys this before (and I am too lazy to go back into the blog posts to look to see if I did) but she has had some barfing episodes.

Not like, a little here an there. Like everyday disastrous vomiting. The first was the beginning of November, and I brought her to the vet and they did some tests (blood, fecal, etc) and everything came back fine. They told me to put her on a bland (chicken and rice) diet.

So princess brown dog got food cooked for her at every meal (oh brother).

Well.. the vomiting stopped for a little while…. and then came back, even with the chicken and rice. So we headed back into the vet last week. Poor girl.

brown dogThey ran more tests – this time for specific disorders/problems she could have as well as some Xrays and when all that came back clear they figured they would treat it as a food allergy, like she may be allergic to a specific type of protein.

Long story short, she is on a special type of food that appears to be working magically and hopefully that was the issue and she wont be sick anymore!

Anyway, that is what’s been going on.

Torrance’s dad has been here from Alaska the last week and leaves tomorrow. He came down for the service this weekend (his parents have been divorced for a long time but were still close) so it was nice having him here.

Things are slowly returning to normal a little bit.

Though, I will somehow have to scramble to get all of my Christmas shopping done this weekend. That should be interesting. I guess everyone is getting socks this year because I dont even know where to begin.

I may even try to bake some Christmas cookies still… but we will see.

Okay, so now I need to be updated – I feel so out of the blogging loop!

  • Tell me – what is new with you, fill me in!
  • When do you typically decorate for Christmas/Hanukah/etc?

  1. You (and your puppy) are in my thoughts!!!!!

Christmas, I would decorate all year if I could. I live in Canada so this whole “American thanksgiving rule” pisses me off when we celebrate our thanksgiving in october so I dont see the sense is waiting for the US to celebrate before decorating (holy rant!). Anyways, this year we decorated the week before the US thanksgiving. To me it was perfect, as I feel we can actually enjoy it!

    • That is silly about the US thanksgiving and it really shouldn’t effect you guys!! Haha oh well, I’m glad you decorated earlier!

  2. I don’t suppose you have a black walnut tree around that the dog is eating the nuts? We had one in NC and it used to make our dog sick too. But the weird thing is that black walnuts are a natural heart worm prevention as well. Another thing is one of our dogs can NO LONGER have rawhides. They do awful things to her.

    • That is so weird about the raw hides because I am wondering that. She had been eating them a lot!
And no walnuts that she has been eating! Since where we are (in an apartment) we have to walk her on the leash at least this one time I can be sure she hasn’t gotten into anything. When we were in a house before we left Alaska and she had free roam I know there were times she had gotten into weird stuff!

  3. Glad to hear Kona is better. My Jack Russell has been having problems lately too. No barfing but he kept loosing his hair and looked like he had mange. Hundreds of dollars spent on vet visits, tests, and medications and still no idea what is causing it. After the last round of meds he seems to be getting somewhat better. We also let the vet do a special dip which helped his skin. Makes me wonder if he just had some type of summer itch or an allergy or what.

Sucks when our doggies are sick. If your like me then I’m sure it breaks your heart and all you want is to see them well. They really are like our kids.

  4. Awww my thoughts are with you guys!! Mwahh 🙂 Ha ha! I’m luving Julie’s comment, being a Canadian as well. We decorated early around, the last weekend in November because we were having peeps from out of time and it would be to hectic around here. Hope brown dog gets well!!

Have a good rest of the week….it’s almost Friday!!

  5. Poor Kona! I hope that this new food will do the trick!

I’m out of the loop too – coaching competitive & regular season cheerleading has taken over my life (seriously). I’m giving midterm exams to my kids starting this Friday, so I’m ready for Christmas break! I put the tree up the weekend after Thanksgiving (that rarely happens – last year we went to Mexico and did NO decorating – it was perfect), but I just decorated it this past weekend. I did the mantle too, but that’s about all I’m going to do.

We are having our annual “White Trash Christmas Bash” this weekend, and I am PUMPED! I still need to figure out what trashy outfit to wear….

  6. We actually didn’t put up our Christmas tree this year. It’s a really small one, and we’re going out of town for the holidays, so I decided not to. But I am determined to buy a tree after the holidays (while everything is on sale) so that we have a BIG one for next year!! 😉

  7. Hope Kona continues to feel better. Pippa is pretty sensitive too and I think might be allergic to peanut butter!! Omg. Next thing you know she’s going to be paleo or something. Hahaha. Glad you are still able to do a little celebrating. Take care!!

  8. My dog also has throwing up issues. Not to go into too much detail, but it’s usually bile (not food). After lots of googling and trying things, I’ve diagnosed her with reflux and she takes pepsid in the morning. For the most part it seems to do the trick. She should probably eat more frequently but that’s hard since I’m at work during the day.
I hope Kona is on the mend!!!
I’m Jewish but my boyfriend is not, so we have a holiday tree, a menorah, and brightly colored awesome lights outside. The tree was put up the week after Thanksgiving but the lights were up the week before thanksgiving. They were just so darn fun we couldn’t wait!

    December 13, 2012
    • Love it! This will sound weird, but I love menorahs!! (I’m not Jewish)
Yes Kona has been taking Pepcid at night before bed and it has been working marvelously so far also 🙂

  9. Love the Christmas decorations! I usually don’t do any holiday baking, but this year I decided to give it a try (probably because I was secretly avoiding homework:\) and I found some easy recipes that were successful!
These ones had crushed potato chips in them!
    …..If you love butterscotch!

and I made those kind that have the Hershey kiss in the middle, courtesy of Hershey’s website.

Post your cookie recipes if you have time!

I’m glad your dog issues are getting better, I had some with my Nick recently. He was having skin issues, ultimately due to his diet and an infection-yuck.

I usually try to put my decorations up right after Thanksgiving-I probably went a little overboard this year, but what can I say, I love Christmas! I put up four full size trees!
