Meals + Grocery List For The Week
I must say, even though it is Monday, I feel surprisingly refreshed today. It must be due to the nice relaxing weekend of nothingness we had. It was MUCH needed since we were out of town last weekend, and will be gone the next two weekends as well.
Also, if you didnt see my whining on IG, I came down with strep throat last week on Thursday. What the…?
I havent been sick in forever, like cant even remember the last time I was – and I actually took a sick day off of work and everything, it was crazy. But am feeling much better now!
Anyway, per my declaration of saving $$ on groceries last week – I actually spent a little time sitting down and planning out my grocery list this week too.
I’m kind of a list-nerd, but I make one list with meals (dinners) for the week (I usually do 5 because we go out to eat, or go to his dads for dinner or something one or two nights). And then also some ideas for lunches (for me, Torrance eats out for lunch everyday) or things I plan on maybe wanting to try to bake.
Then, I make my grocery list with ALL the ingredients needed for all of those planned meals, and then I go through and cross off stuff I already have at home so I am left with the stuff I need to buy for the meals I have planned. And then lastly I of course add any other things I need – like eggs, flour, milk, the usual things I may just be out of or buy every week – the incidentals if you will.
It worked out pretty good. This is what I used to do and it was much more efficient [for me] than going to the grocery store and deciding what I was gonna make while standing there because I would always forget stuff, or buy stuff I didnt need or use.
It worked out good because I actually did shave off a good $35 from what my typical grocery bill has been lately.
I spent a total of $108.
I did still spend a pretty penny alone just on the scallops and the big fat New York steak (that I got for my lunches – see below). There are some things I am just still willing to pay a little more for – like good quality meat and seafood.
Here is what my dinner plans look like this week, ya know, if you’re into that kind of thing:
- Scallops (sea)/steamed asparagus/cous cous
- Salads with garlic bread
- Lemon-garlic shrimp/steamed broccoli/baked potatoes (sweet potato for me)
- Chicken soft tacos
- Chicken alfredo (w/ chicken, mushrooms, broccoli, and peas)/garlic bread (no alfredo for me! Just the chicken and veggies…and yes, garlic bread. Muahaha)
Yesterday I spent the majority of the day (okay, really only like 2 hours, but that’s a lot for a Sunday) prepping my lunches.
I did 2 different “salads” for this week:
I got a really fat New York strip and thinly sliced it, seasoned it, and cooked it up in a cast iron skillet (since I cant have a grill at our apartment… wah).
I did 2 of my usual basic salads:
- steak (usually I use chicken or turkey)
- cherry tomatoes
- romaine and spinach
And then I also did a Southwest “bowl.” I only had 3 jars because some of them had moonshine in them (ya know, priorities)….. so I put one of the southwest styles’ in my bento box!
- brown rice
- black beans
- fresh pico de gallo
Voila! Super simple!
I do so much better when I plan stuff out.
I really struggle with lunches during the week because I am too lazy to make stuff in the mornings/etc; and lately at lunch time, even with being able to go home for lunch, I have just been on the-go running around so I typically eat at my desk so I like to keep it as simple as possible or else I end up eating random things at like, 2pm.
Have a gooooood week!
- How was your weekend?
- I know we have discussed before– but what meal do you struggle with most (coming up with ideas, preparing, etc)?
- How frequently do you grocery shop? (Once a month, every 2 weeks, etc)
I always go once a week!
